Severe weather risks are shifting this week back to Plains and Midwest while the weather in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states couldn't be better to start off this holiday week. In the Northern Plains today we have severe thunderstorm and elevated tornado risks for the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota. The riska area shifts eastward Tuesday and Wednesday in the Middle and Upper Mississippi River Valley from Missouri and Kansas northward into parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Tornado risk will also be elevated.

The Midwest and Great Lakes are set for an active lake-effect snow season. However, skiers in the Southwest should brace for a drier-than-normal winter, with below-average snowfall anticipated. Colder temperatures in the northern regions should help maintain good snow conditions, while the potential for big storms in the Appalachians could bring some epic powder days to East Coast resorts.

Beryl's remnants will be lifting through the Great Lakes Region today. This will lift a warm front through New England during the day. This warm front will likely slow down or even stall out across central Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine due to an approaching cold front from Canada. This front will provide the focus for a swath of heavy rainfall, where multiple inches of rain will be possible. Areas north and south of this front will see lesser rainfall. Areas south may also see some strong to severe storms in the warm sector.
