Gunshot victim collapses, dies in front of National Shrine in D.C.

District of Columbia police said a man who was shot fell from his moped and died Monday in front of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in the Northeast part of the city, triggering a brief shelter-in-place order for nearby Catholic University.

Metropolitan Police said the man, who wasn’t identified, dropped from his gas-powered scooter shortly before 8 p.m. on the 400 block of Michigan Avenue Northeast.

Officers responding to the scene noticed the man had been shot. He was pronounced dead.

Police said they believe the man was mortally wounded elsewhere before he drove by the Basilica and collapsed in front of it.

Catholic University had its shelter-in-place order for an hour while police investigated the man’s death.

"Even though no incident took place on campus, the university asked the community to shelter in place so we could assess a possible threat," the school's president, Peter Kilpatrick, said in a statement to Washington Fox affiliate WTTG. "We canceled the shelter-in-place order once MPD assured us that there were no active threats to our community."

Mr. Kilpatrick said he doesn't believe the victim had any connection to the university.

Police haven't named any suspects or persons of interest in the man's death.
