Debby Death Toll Rises Before Hurricane Downgrades To Tropical Storm

At least four people have died in relation to Tropical Storm Debby , which made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane Monday (August 5) morning, NBC News reports.

Two people, including a 12-year-old boy, were reported to have died in a single-vehicle crash in Dixie County when the tropical storm was making its way to the Big Bend region of Florida's Gulf Coast late Sunday (August 4) night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The vehicle was reported to have lost control due to "inclement weather and wet roadway" and struck the guardrail in the center median before overturning and leaving the roadway to the right.

The driver was identified as a 38-year-old woman who was pronounced dead at the scene, along with a 12-year-old male passenger. A 14-year-old male passenger was transported to the UF Health with serious injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol report obtained by NBC News .

A 13-year-old boy was previously reported to have died after a tree fell on a mobile home, according to the Levy County Sheriff's Office. A 64-year-old male driving an 18-wheeler that partially fell into the Tampa Bypass Canal early Monday morning was also pronounced dead in relation to the storm.

Debby made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane with sustained wind speeds up to 80 MPH on the Big Bend stretch of Florida's Gulf Coast at 7:00 a.m. ET on Monday, the National Hurricane Center announced. Parts of Pinellas County along the west central coast of Florida were reported to have gotten up to 11 inches of rain as of 7:35 a.m. local time, the Pinellas County Department of Emergency confirmed.
