DIXON, Ill. — Three Ogle County sheriff’s deputies were shot Wednesday after responding to a home where someone had threatened to harm themselves or others, an official said. The suspected shooter was also shot and has since been identified.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said authorities were called to a home on the 400 block of Wild Rice Lane, near Lost Lake, at 8:39 a.m. after a family member called 911 to report that a person in the home had threatened them and himself.

A SWAT team and hostage negotiators were called to the scene and arrived at 10:20 a.m. and repeatedly tried to make contact with the person inside the home, according to the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO). After more than 50 attempted phone calls, authorities moved in shortly before noon.

“Immediately upon entering the house, our deputies received fire from inside the house,” VanVickle said.

OCSO officials said deputies returned fire and incapacitated the suspect, but one SWAT team member was shot in the face, another in the upper arm, and a third was hit in their armor.

The suspect, identified by OCSO officials as Jonathon G. Gournaris, was found by SWAT team members inside the front door of the residence with multiple firearms, a fixed-blade knife, pepper spray and ballistic armor.

A spokesperson at Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital in Dixon said three people were taken to the hospital’s emergency department, two of whom were treated and released.

According to a later release from the OCSO, the third member of law enforcement was flown to OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford and underwent surgery this evening.

VanVinkle said all who were injured in the incident are in “good” condition.

Deputies said Gournaris was taken to a local hospital where he also underwent surgery.

The Illinois State Police are in charge of the investigation, which remains ongoing.
