Things to consider before Buying a Dog

    2022-09-07

    SHOULD I BUY A DOG?

This really is the starting place on your journey to finding the best friend you'll ever have. Unfortunately, it's all too common for people to fall in love with the idea of having a dog without taking into consideration the time and commitment such a decision entails.

    CAN I AFFORD A DOG?

Owning a pet doesn't just require time and effort, it also requires money. In the case of a dog, especially a puppy, significant finances may be required. A puppy, especially if it is from a breeder, can cost hundreds, in some cases thousands, of dollars, depending on the breed.

Regular check-ups at a vet can quickly mount up, and there is the question of insurance payments to cover more costly events such as surgery. This is without taking into consideration a daily budget you'll have to put aside to feed your pet.

It's important that a potential dog owner understands the costs which can accumulate before deciding to buy a puppy.

Is this the right time for a dog?

Whether you are thinking about a young puppy or an older rescue dog, a new dog will require time to settle into your home. Make sure all other areas of your life are in order so that you can concentrate fully on helping your new dog to settle in. If you are about to move to a new home, welcome a baby, or even host a busy family gathering, now may not be the time. Think: is it fair to expect a dog to cope with this on top of a new home?

The actual age of your dog

Older dogs and cats find it harder to get coverage as they will need treatment more often.

Some pet insurance companies or insurers will only allow you to take out a new policy if your beloved pet is under 8 or 9 years of age or even younger in the case of some special breeds.

Buying a whole life policy when they're young may not be the cheapest option, but it ensures your pet will always be covered – even in the case of long-term illnesses.

How to Buy or Buy Pet Insurance

Pet insurance can be quite expensive, so it's worth shopping around to get the best deal.

Pet insurance comparison sites are a good place to start. However, not all of them cover the entire market. So use several different sites so you don't miss out on good deals.

Professionals in this market include Pet plan and Healthy Pets.

You can get the first four or five weeks of insurance free under a contract that many breeders are now offering.

If you have an exotic pet that is having a hard time getting insurance, a broker can help.

If I were able to get a dog, I would wait as long as it takes to adopt the breed I want.

Specific breeds can have specific health issues and it’s important to look into those and whether or not you can afford proper care, make sure you get a dog that can match your lifestyle and energy level. There are so many wonderful dogs in shelters who need homes. You could be saving a life and right now many shelters are overflowing. It’s even worth mentioning if you are thinking of adopting but haven’t made up your mind volunteering or fostering is also an option.
