Contra Reopens as a Cocktail Bar
The tasting menu restaurant, Contra, announced last fall that it would be closing after a decade. That was only half the story since owners Jeremiah Stone and Fabián von Hauske Valtierra kept the space. On July 23, they debut a reimagined version of 138 Orchard Street, as Bar Contra, adding cocktail expert and longtime friend Dave Arnold, known for experimental Existing Conditions, and Booker and Dax, as an owner.
Hospital for Special Surgery names medical leadership in Florida
New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery appointed new medical director roles in Florida. Sheeraz Qureshi, MD, is chief medical officer of HSS Florida and succeeds Douglas Padgett, MD, according to a July 22 news release. He has been co-chief of HSS Spine and holds the Patty and Jay Baker Chair in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. In the expanded role, he will oversee clinical operations and quality for HSS' Florida presence and work with HSS Florida CEO Tara McCoy to grow access to care.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating over two dozen reported illnesses across 12 states. As of Friday, 28 people have been sickened and hospitalized, with the most cases reported in New York state, with 7 people hospitalized. Two deaths have been reported, one in New Jersey and another in Illinois. The first case was reported May 29, and the most recent illness connected to the outbreak was reported July 5. Adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s ‘Nickel Boys’ to open New York Film Festival this fall
“Nickel Boys,” an adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, will open the 62nd New York Film Festival in September, organizers said Monday. Filmmaker RaMell Ross directed the drama based on the 2019 novel about two Black teenagers in an abusive reform school in Florida in Jim Crow-era Florida. Whitehead used the real Dozier School for Boys, and its victims, as a model. The cast includes Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
