Surry Community College and the James Hunter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution were recently honored with the Elizabeth Reed Gibson Award for the Most Outstanding Work for Constitution Week.
This award, bestowed at the North Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution meeting in Durham recently, is the result of a partnership among SCC’s Faculty Senate, the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and two local DAR chapters: the James Hunter Chapter and the Jonathan Hunt Chapter.
Together, they honored Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23, with a variety of activities. College President Dr. David Shockley read a proclamation of Constitution Week, which was broadcast throughout the main campus and its four remote centers. His proclamation marked the 235th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, honored its importance as the founding document of American democracy, and reminded listeners of the fundamental freedoms which the U.S. Constitution guarantees. Shockley’s proclamation was followed by a recording of the bells of Independence Hall.
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society chapter president Sydney Presa created multiple tri-fold displays with information about the U.S. Constitution, which were displayed in local libraries in Surry and Yadkin counties.
Other commemorative events on campus included a display of constitutional materials in the college library, and free copies of the U.S. Constitution provided by the Student Government Association. Phi Theta Kappa, Faculty Senate, and the James Hunter Chapter of the DAR partnered to provide festive decorations announcing the week-long celebration and put information about Constitution Week on the tables for diners to read in the Knights Grill on the Dobson campus. They also created Constitutional Fun Facts, which were displayed all week on digital screens throughout the campus and its centers.
Constitution Week is dedicated to commemorating one of America’s most important documents. The U.S. Constitution is celebrated because it stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, freedoms, and inalienable rights.
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is an honor society in higher education with nearly 1,300 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, plus Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates, and U.S. territorial possessions. More than 3.8 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with over 250,000 active members annually.
For more than a century, the members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution have dedicated themselves to historical preservation, promotion of education, and encouragement of patriotic endeavor. Most of DAR’s volunteer work is accomplished by the grassroots efforts of chapters on the local level which focus on the mission areas of DAR by encouraging members to become involved in these initiatives in their local communities.
