Some might say that any time is a good time to discover Dobson, but soon there will be another slate of reasons to venture to the county seat that don’t involve a visit to the courthouse.

Music at the Market is returning to the Surry County Farmer’s Market in Dobson for another series of free concerts.

“Come hear live bluegrass and old-time string band music emanating from the foothills of northwest North Carolina at the Surry County Farmers Market,” said Travis Frye, tourism director for Dobson and Surry County. “These monthly events feature artists from the region that reflect our cultural heritage.”

A man of music himself, Frye was excited to announce a slate of six free shows featuring artists that will be familiar to area residents. All shows will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Farmers Market in Dobson at 903 E. Atkins Street. Frye added, “Admission is free and we encourage folks to bring their lawn chairs.”

“The Surry County Farmers Market has a large shelter able to accommodate over 300 guests which provides shelter rain or shine,” Frye said. Tables and chairs will be set up for those who wish to eat under the Farmers Market. Restrooms and an ATM are found on the property where there will be adequate parking.

The concert series is growing according to Frye. “Each year we have been fortunate to see incremental increases in food trucks, sponsors, and concert goers. It does take time to get established, but we believe in providing quality family entertainment while highlighting our cultural heritage that has been passed down for generations.”

Kicking off the 2024 Music at the Market Concert Series will be Steve Marshall & Highroad on Friday, July 12 and The County Boys will follow on Friday, July 19.

After a two week respite, the series returns with Slate Mountain Ramblers ready to take the stage on Friday, August 2.

The next week, Friday, August 9, Hubert Lawson & The Bluegrass Country Boys will perform, and August’s performances will wrap up on Friday, August 30, with Nunn Brothers & Friends.

In September, the concert series will go out with a bang and welcome Harrison Ridge to perform on Friday, Sept. 13.

Plans are in place if Mother Nature throws a curveball. He said, “In the event of thunderstorms, those concerts will be moved across the parking lot to the Surry County Service Center indoors.”

Frye offered a reminder that food trucks will be set up on site at the Farmers Market and will be ready to serve beginning at 6 p.m. with music to follow. While some folks may roll in just to patronize one of their favorite food trucks, organizers hope everyone stays put for the main event to follow.

Food trucks are already set for the six concert dates and will feature some combination of The Chill Mobile, Fat Catz BBQ, Kinders Kitchen, Station 1978 Firehouse Peanuts, and Mermaids on the Go.

The concert series helps promote the farmers market and drives traffic in general to the town he explained, “It brings visitors into the town of Dobson from nearby hotels, Airbnb’s, and surrounding municipalities providing both locals and visitors an opportunity to Discover Dobson, and all it has to offer.”

Frye thanked the many sponsors of the Music at the Market Concert Series who are helping to “make this music series possible” and facilitate six nights of free music for folks to enjoy.

Event sponsors include Carolina West Wireless / Surry Communications, Johnson Granite, Frontier Natural Gas Company, John L. Gravitte DDS, PA, Royster & Royster, Perkins & Associates, Surry-Yadkin Electric Membership Corporation, and Chatham Nursing & Rehabilitation.
