DOBSON — A Surry Central High School graduate has received a scholarship from the North Carolina Farm Bureau, which will aid his studies in poultry science.

Andrew Fulk was tapped for the Farm Bureau’s R. Flake Shaw Scholarship, named for a native of Guilford County who served as president of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation in 1940.

The Flake scholarship program, launched in 1967, to date has awarded more than $3 million to youths pursuing a future in the agriculture industry.

It includes both a university-level component and one in which four individual, community college scholarships are granted for a two-year period at $1,000 annually ($2,000 total per student).

Andrew will attend Wilkes Community College in the fall to study poultry science to become a field representative for Wayne Sanderson Farms and eventually a poultry grower.

The Surry Central graduate enjoys working in chicken houses and with cattle.

Farm Bureau scholarships are awarded to rising freshmen who, in addition to seeking a career in agriculture or a farming-related field, demonstrate satisfactory grades, an understanding of agricultural sciences and/or agribusiness and leadership potential.
