Dodgers’ Max Muncy Encounters Unusual Opponent on Rehab Trail: Max Muncy

It finally happened.

Los Angeles Dodgers Max Muncy crossed paths with Oakland Athletics prospect Max Muncy during a Triple-A game between Oklahoma City and Las Vegas on Tuesday night at Las Vegas Ballpark. The game ended in favor of the Dodgers’ Muncy 10-8.

Dodgers third baseman Muncy, 33, has been a mainstay in the lineup for the past seven seasons. He has been named an All-Star twice and launched 184 home runs since 2018. But, he has been sidelined with a right oblique strain since May 15.

The other Muncy, 21, is on the cusp of breaking into the big leagues. He’s slashing .271/.367/.493 with Las Vegas this season.

It is one of the more random coincidences in life. Two men born exactly 12 years apart and completely unrelated finally met and played in the same game.

“It was awesome,” the Aviators shortstop said. “Obviously, it’s been a long time coming. I mean, my grandparents have followed him since he was at Baylor, so we’ve known about him for a while. So I think it was just a lot of years of knowing him, and it was kind of cool to meet him. Obviously, I’m from L.A., so I hear about him all the time and I get all the questions.”

The similarities between the two go further than just their name and birthdays – they were both drafted by Oakland. The A’s selected the elder Muncy in the fifth round of the 2012 Draft. Nine years later, they drafted the younger Muncy in the first round, No. 25 overall, out of Thousand Oaks (Calif.) High School.

Hang on, it gets weirder.

The Dodgers’ Muncy is from Midland, Texas. The A’s Muncy played in Midland last season with the Double-A RockHounds. The younger Muncy is from Los Angeles, which is where the elder Muncy plays for the Dodgers.

“It’s almost like we swapped spots for a little bit,” the younger Muncy quipped.

The similarities stop there because, thank goodness, they have different middle names.

“It’s kind of a cool thing,” the Dodgers’ Muncy told Vegas Strong Sports’ Ron Futrell. “It’s not very often you see that happen.”
