Los Angeles Dodgers utility player Tommy Edman is slated to make his Dodgers debut on Monday, per manager Dave Roberts.

“I think the hope is that he’ll be with us Monday when we get home,” Roberts said via MLB Network Radio. “Looking at the calendar, I’m sure Tommy wanted to play against his hold club. But the rehab process, where he didn’t play any defense basically this year, we wanted to get his legs under him. The rehab process kicks him to Monday. That’s kind of the hope.”

The Dodgers begin their series with the Seattle Mariners on Monday. If Edman had returned a day sooner, he would’ve had the opportunity to compete against his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals. Nevertheless, Edman will make his debut for the club in front of thousands of fans at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers are looking to utilize Edman in the infield and outfield.

“Tommy is going to take a lot of his repetitions in center field,” Roberts said. “He’s going to take some at short, and he’ll take some at second as well.”

In the first inning of Thursday’s rehab game, the utility man hit a two-run home run for Oklahoma City. Edman was 1-for-3 in Las Vegas.

Edman has bounced around on defense in his rehab stint, playing center field on Thursday and shortstop on Wednesday. His ability to play several positions is a big reason why the Dodgers orchestrated the trade for him at the deadline.

Edman was sent on a rehab assignment due to a lingering right wrist injury and a sprained ankle. Through four games with Oklahoma City, he’s gone 4-for-12 at the plate.

Edman has yet to play a big league game this season after an offseason surgery for his right wrist.

Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy was also sent to Oklahoma City, while he recovers from a right oblique strain. Muncy hasn’t played for the Dodgers since May 26. The third baseman’s injury prevented him from swinging the bat comfortably which slowed down his recovery process.

Dodgers fans await the return of both Edman and Muncy. Since Edman was one of the Dodgers’ key additions at the trade deadline, fans are eager to witness the utility man in action.

Los Angeles is fighting to keep the lead in the National League West. The Arizona Diamondback and San Diego Padres are creeping closely behind.

The return of Muncy and the debut of Edman could aid the Dodgers in the nail-biting race.
