Dodgers, NL West Rivals Asked About Blake Snell at Trade Deadline: Report

The Los Angeles Dodgers weren’t the only National League West team to ask about Blake Snell at the trade deadline. The San Diego Padres also sought a potential trade for the left-hander who threw for them from 2021-23.

MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported the interest.

The San Francisco Giants didn’t budge. The club didn’t give up the Cy Young Award winner and certainly didn’t want to aid an NL West rival team in strengthening their rotation by handing over Snell.

The Dodgers could’ve used Snell to give new life to a rotation that has been hampered by injury all season long. A return to San Diego for Snell could’ve put the Padres over the top, a trade Dodgers fans are relieved didn’t happen.

Snell is in his best form since he joined the Giants. On Aug. 2, the left-hander achieved one of the few milestones he had left to accomplish in his MLB career—a no-hitter.

Snell made history against the Cincinnati Reds when he pitched into the ninth inning for the first time in his career. The nine-year veteran had only pitched as far as the eighth inning, but Snell was able to go the distance for San Francisco.

“There’s been a bunch of crap about him not going deep into games,” Giants catcher Patrick Bailey told MLB.com’s Maria Guardado. “We were joking about it the other day. I was like, ‘We’re going to go nine shutty together.’ I think one of us was like, ‘Why not just throw a no-hitter?’”

Snell had a slow start with the Giants but shut down speculation about his pitching abilities after throwing the no-hitter.

“They can’t say it anymore,” said Snell, who also earned his first win for San Francisco. “Complete game, shutout, no-hitter. Leave me alone. ‘He doesn’t go into the 9th. He doesn’t go into the 8th.’ Just did it. Leave me alone.”

Snell became the first no-hit pitcher in a Giants uniform since Chris Heston’s performance against the New York Mets on June 9, 2015. It was the third no-hitter in MLB this season. Only San Diego’s Dylan Cease and Houston Astros Ronel Blanco have pitched a no-no.

The no-hit pitcher is a valuable asset on any team. Although the Dodgers didn’t snag Snell at the deadline, Los Angeles added Jack Flaherty, Michael Kopech, and Kevin Kiermaier. All three additions to the club, have paid dividends.

Flaherty has strengthened the starting rotation. Kopech is on pace to become the official Dodgers’ closer. And Kiermaier is making an impact on both defense and at the plate.
