Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed reliever Brent Honeywell went unclaimed on waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City, according to the MLB.com transaction log.

Honeywell has a previous career outright, so he can decline the assignment in favor of minor-league free agency but as of Tuesday, he has been sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

When the Dodgers designated Honeywell for assignment on Sunday, he had a 2.21 earned run average and allowed six runs (five earned), over 20.1 innings across 10 appearances, with 12 strikeouts and four walks.

He started the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates turning in a 4.85 ERA across 39 innings for the Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis. He was called up in late July and made two appearances with the Pirates before Pittsburgh designated him for assignment and lost him on waivers to Los Angeles.

Part of his charm was a screwball pitch that he learned from his father, who was coached by former Dodgers pitcher Mike Marshall in college.

“Mike Marshall taught my dad the pitch, and then my dad taught me the pitch when I was in high school,” Honeywell said. “I’ve been throwing it my whole career.”

The Dodgers gave Honeywell plenty of opportunities to impress, and he did at times, but he was squeezed off the roster when they promoted Ben Casparius for a couple of days.

Honeywell reported to Oklahoma City and debuted on Thursday night. He threw two scoreless innings against the El Paso Chihuahuas, striking out one batter while allowing one hit and one walk.

The 29-year-old was once a Top 100 prospect for the Tampa Bay Rays. But four arm surgeries in the last decade have turned him into a journeyman; the Dodgers became the sixth team to designate him for assignment.

The Georgia native was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 72nd pick of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Walters State Community College.

He has been in the big leagues over parts of three seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays (2021), the San Diego Padres (2023), the Chicago White Sox (2023), and the Pittsburgh Pirates (2024). He is a combined 2-4 with a 4.95 ERA in 45 games (two starts).
