Noah Syndergaard Wants Another Shot in MLB, But Not With Dodgers

Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Noah Syndergaard said Sunday that he would love to play for the New York Mets again. Syndergaard, who spent part of the 2023 season with the Dodgers, has not pitched this season.

“I’d love to come home to New York, hopefully that’s in store for me,” Syndergaard said on the Terry Collins Show. “I love the fanbase, I love the city, I love the culture, the history, the passion. It’s the best place to play.”

Syndergaard has spent the majority of his career with the Mets. He was originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 38th round of the 2010 MLB Draft, and spent parts of three seasons in the Blue Jays’ minor league system before he was traded to the Mets in Dec. 2012 as part of the R.A. Dickey trade.

Syndergaard was called up for the first time in 2015, making his debut on May 12 of that year. As a rookie, he helped the Mets reach the World Series in 2015, where they lost to the Kansas City Royals. Syndergaard started the only game the Mets won during the World Series.

The long, blonde-haired pitcher put in his best year the following season in 2016, making the lone All-Star team of his career. During that 2016 season, Syndergaard started 30 games and went 14-9 with a 2.60 ERA while striking out 218 as he finished top-10 in MLB in strikeouts that year and third in ERA.

Syndergaard became injury prone over much of his next five seasons with the Mets, including being limited to seven games in 2017. In 2020, Syndergaard would miss the entire season after undergoing Tommy John surgery for a torn UCL. He returned in 2021, but was limited to just two starts that season.

Following the 2021 season, he signed with the Los Angeles Angels. He played for the Angels and Philadelphia Phillies in 2022, before signing with the Dodgers in Dec. 2022.

Syndergaard started 12 games for the Dodgers in 2023, but struggled as he went 1-4 with a 7.16 ERA and 38 strikeouts. He gave up at least five earned runs in each of his final three starts with the Dodgers, and was ultimately placed on the injured list due to blisters on his hand. A month later, Syndergaard was traded to the Cleveland Guardians, where he closed out the season with a 5.40 ERA over six starts.

The feeling is mutual. Dodgers already have too many gas cans.
