Dodgers News: Freddie Freeman Ankle Issue is ‘Worst Injury’ He’s Tried to Play Through

Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman is trying to play through a right ankle sprain that would normally be a four to six-week injured list stint, per Mike DiGiovanna of The Los Angeles Times.

Freeman noted the ankle sprain is the worst injury he’s attempted to play through, but the All-Star did say the swell has gone down a considerable amount.

“A lot of treatment. A lot of time in the training room. The swelling has come down a lot so I feel good, good enough. Overall, I felt much better than I have in the last couple of days.”

Overall, it’s not great news for the Dodgers. Nevertheless, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts still expects Freeman to be in the starting lineup at first base tomorrow. If Freeman can’t start, he will likely be available to pinch-hit off the bench.

During the intrasquad games played Wednesday and Thursday, Freeman didn’t run the bases during his at-bats. Max Muncy was seen working out at first base and Kiké Hernández played at third base. Muncy will likely replace Freeman at first if he is unavailable to play.

On Friday, Freeman played defense and ran the bases. The first baseman also did some sprints. He was able to successfully meet expectations for his workout regimen ahead of the NLDS.

“The last two was running base and ground balls,” Freeman said Friday. “That was my last couple of checkboxes and I was able to do that today.”

Injuries have persisted into the postseason for the Dodgers. Freeman isn’t the only starter dealing with an injury. Dodgers shortstop Miguel Rojas is dealing with an abductor injury, however, he is also expected to start Game 1.

Freeman’s status for Game 1 is one of the many mysteries of October baseball, but fans will know soon enough if the first baseman will start the matchup.

This year has been one of the toughest seasons for Freeman. Along with multiple injuries, his three-year-old son Maximus was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome. It’s certainly been a trying year for Freeman, but Roberts heaped high praise for the first baseman.

“He’s just such a warrior,” Roberts said. “And he’s gonna do anything he can to post.”

The Dodgers remain confident he will start for the series opener against San Diego.
