Umpire Costs Dodgers Run in Unbelievable Play During Game 4 vs Padres

With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, the Los Angeles Dodgers were robbed of a run.

Already leading 5-0 with Shohei Ohtani on second base, Teoscar Hernández turned on an inside pitch sending it down the third base line. The baseball ricocheted off San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado’s glove and then bounced off the third base umpire’s outstretched arm.

Machado was able to fight his way around the umpire, scooped up the ball, and then turned and fired home where Kyle Higashioka tagged Ohtani out to end the inning. This wasn’t even the first weird play involving Machado this series.

It turns out Dodgers third base coach Dino Ebel had both arms up, throwing up the stop sign for Ohtani — but the designated hitter never looked up as he hit the bag and rounded for the plate in stride, knowing the ball got behind Machado.

Ohtani didn’t know what happened or how he was thrown out until he was back in the dugout and saw the replay on the tablet. He was visibly upset and screamed out in frustration while looking in the direction of the umpire.

If the ball didn’t hit the umpire, Ohtani would have scored easily and extended the Dodgers lead to 6-0. However, the inning ended and the score remained 5-0.
