Accidental kitchen fire claims dog’s life

The tragic incident occurred in Tavistock (West Devon, England), and the Tavistock Fire Station shared the details on Facebook. On Friday, August 16, 2024, at 1:47 p.m. BST, the firefighters responded to a house fire as the neighbors raised the alarm after smelling smoke from next door. The crew noted no one was home after searching through the house, which was covered in “thick smoke with a fire in the kitchen.”

The fire station reported that the dog started a fire after jumping up to the cooker and accidentally turning the hob on. They deduced that the incident is not “uncommon.” It is natural for a pet dog to try to reach for the food left on top of the hob. However, the subsequent fire caused severe damage to the kitchen.

Meanwhile, the rest of the house was also affected by smoke damage. The crew extinguished the fire and rescued a gerbil and guinea pig. Unfortunately, the dog died due to smoke inhalation. Although the rescued pets were treated by the local vet, the service did not disclose information about the family or the dog that passed away.
