A loyal dog from Washington has been dubbed a “hero” after the pup led a live-saving rescue of an 84-year-old man. The incident, which took place last month, was shared by the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office. The department notes there could have been “serious consequences” if the elderly man had not been found after getting stranded in the woods.

Faithful dog leads deputy to stranded owner in Washington woods

The Stevens County Sheriff’s Office took to their Facebook page to share the story about a “hero dog” saving the owner’s life. The department shared that Deputy Wright was patrolling a rural wooded area of Stevens County. He then came across a dog sitting in the roadway and tried to get the canine into his vehicle. However, the pup didn’t do so. Since there were no residences nearby, Wright checked the surrounding area within a mile but could not find the owner.

This led to the officer sensing something was wrong. Wright returned to the dog, only to see the canine lying on the road’s centerline. The pup later took off on an unmarked roadway and led the deputy to a small summer cabin in the woods. After checking the area, Wright found a man lying on the ground and calling for help.

The department noted the 84-year-old “had other medical conditions needing regular medications.” After falling and injuring his leg, the man unfortunately lay there for hours. If he had not been found, it may have had “serious consequences.” However, the old man’s 13-year-old rescue dog and best friend, Gita, saved his life that day. The Stevens County Sheriff’s Office continued to thank Deputy Wright for his “extra effort,” and Gita for “being a good girl and true hero.”

Several social media users also praised the officer for following his instincts. Moreover, they showered Gita with love for being a faithful pup.
