Support Your Local Mom and Pop Eateries
I haven't gone to some eateries for a long time. One takeout restaurant that I last visited a while ago is Diners in Kalihi. I noticed the sign change of the takeout restaurant several years ago but paid no attention to it because they served good local comfort food. However, after visiting their website, I knew the company, Diners, now called Diners by Upscale Hawaii, either merged or purchased the original Diners takeout restaurant.
Name Your Favorite Meal With Spam
Spam is an island favorite for any meal of the day. You can prepare meals using spam with about any other ingredients. According to SPAM, sales of seven million cans of spam are the result of people in Hawaii purchasing spam. There are 48 countries where spam is sold and enjoyed.
Who Makes the Best Fried Chicken
I finally went to Jollibee to try their original fried chicken. I knew only one Jollibee in the area, so I visited the Kalihi fast food restaurant. I ordered the 3-piece combo with a side of mashed potato and a regular diet Pepsi. I’ve eaten at Popeyes, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and now Jollibee. I like other places that serve fried chicken in the area, but I wanted to compare fast food restaurants with a global reach.
Visit This Store for Good Filipino Food
I remember going to North Star Sausage eatery and store while in college. It's been a few years since I've been to the N. King Street location, but I've checked on Yelp the reviews are recent. That means they are probably still open for business. So, I stopped by their store/eatery today to purchase bagnet (chicharon). I remember the lady working there several years ago, and I was not surprised by the variety of Filipino food. I went late in the afternoon, so most of the food was gone. But a few bagnet (chicharon) were left, so I purchased some. They cut it into pieces, so I didn't have to do it at home.
Mac Salad With Two Scoops of Rice
If you go to many local eateries, you’ll find the meals have a portion of meat, two scoops of rice, and macaroni salad. Many food trucks serve their plate lunches with a meat portion, two rice scoops, and a macaroni salad scoop. The macaroni salad is almost the same at eateries and food trucks, with minor variations in their ingredients.
This Fast Food Makes Good Fried Chicken
Many restaurants serve good fried chicken, but only some fast food restaurants with drive-throughs serve good fried chicken. Sometimes I prefer to drive through a drive through restaurant and pick up my food and eat on the run. I've tried several places, such as Kentucky Fried Chicken, but the best fried chicken I can get at a drive-through is Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. I was surprised to find out that there were only several locations on the island and only one on the neighboring island. There is no Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen at the neighbor island I'll be moving to in several weeks. Here are the locations in Hawaii.
What Restaurant Serves the Best Loco Moco
I searched online to find out the origins of the loco moco meal. Almost all say the origins started in a restaurant in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1949; what is the loco moco meal? It’s rice served with hamburger patties on top of it with eggs sunny side up with gravy poured all over it.
Visit the Iron Grill Food Truck for Awesome Comfort Food
I've spent the past few weeks driving around the island, searching for restaurants and food trucks to try their food. I noticed a food truck within several hundred feet in front of the entrance to my apartment building. I didn't have to go far today to find a place to eat and write about it. I'm not sure how long the food truck was there, but I've owned my condo apartment for twenty years and ordered food from a food truck there when I first moved in.
Visit This Restaurant Near the Airport for Good Comfort Foods
Joe's Grill Express was #77 on the Yelp list of restaurants on Oahu. For several months, I've been trying restaurants around the area. Also, since the start of summer break, I've been going to restaurants, ordering the Denver omelet, and comparing them in terms of price, taste, and amount of food served.
Will the Rail Transit Help Reduce Traffic
I had written a NewsBreak piece about the rail transit being over budget and years overdue. However, after seeing an article in the local news about the rail transit not having restrooms at the stops, I wonder if it will dissuade whatever interest some people have now.
Visit one of the Six Korean BBQ Restaurant Nearest You Today
My next stop took me across the street from my apartment. I've eaten at Pearl's Korean BBQ restaurant, so I know what to expect. For their regular plate, they serve four vegetables: two scoops of rice, sliced fried eggplant, fried gyoza, and your choice of a meat item or a combination of meats.
I Donated Almost Everything to a Goodwill Store Donation Center
In my continued effort to try as many restaurants as possible in three weeks before moving, I came across a restaurant on my list that I won't write a review for my visit. Instead, I wanted to write something more positive. For the past several days, I've been doing a lot of cleaning; that means throwing away a lot of access stuff and donating clothing, books, and kitchen utensils to organizations that accept donations.
This Restaurant Makes Delicious Pancakes and Waffles
Pancake & Waffles in Kalihi was easy to find, and I found parking in no time. I read their menu in advance and wanted to try their Denver omelet with a side of pancakes. The restaurant was clean and had a nice ambiance. I went on a Wednesday morning; it looked like it was during non-peak hours.
Here is a List of Some of the Restaurants with Breakfast and Comfort Foods on the Island
I have less than three weeks left before I move to a neighboring island. I’ve spent 36 years in Honolulu. After I left home for college, I never left. But with a job transfer, I’ll be selling my apartment in my condominium building and moving. I plan to visit and eat at as many eateries and diners as possible during my last few weeks here. The first stop was Koa Pancake House. I visited the restaurant during spring vacation. Here is a list of eateries I’d like to try before I move.
Visit Matsumoto Shave Ice Store on Your Way to the North Shore of Oahu
I don't usually go to the North Shore of Oahu, but I felt like driving to Oahu's North Shore on a Sunday morning. On my way to the North Shore, I went through Haleiwa, and most of the time, Matsumoto Shaved Ice Store is always busy; but I went around mid-morning and saw they had no line. I quickly found parking and walked to Matsumoto Shave Ice Store.
Visit Lee’s Lunch Wagon if You’re Looking for Good Breakfast Comfort Food
When I worked in the downtown Honolulu area for several years, I used to eat at lunch wagons almost every day. I rarely eat at lunch wagons anymore. However, I was in the Costco area in Waipio early Saturday morning; I noticed a food truck, Lee’s Breakfast Lunch Wagon.
Is Building a New College Football Stadium Worth the Cost
Watching the city spend billions of dollars over budget and years over due on the rail transit, I understand why many hesitate to see another project built in the state. The city built the rail transit, but the State of Hawaii still holds the purse strings. Any project of that size affects everyone in the state because everything is funded directly through state funding.
Do You Plan to Ride on the Rail Transit
I moved to Oahu in 1986. Since I can remember, there were always talks about building a rail transit system from the west side of Oahu to Honolulu. There were many ongoing studies, environmental impact statements, and discussions, but final approval didn't happen until 2005. After years of delay and billions of dollars over budget, we are finally seeing the start of the operation of the rail system.
Home Recipes Are Sometimes the Best Recipes
I visited many restaurants since I started writing on NewsBreak. I wrote reviews about some comfort foods I've tried at these restaurants. The cost is always a factor when I choose a restaurant to review on NewsBreak. Most of the restaurants are local eateries where I live. I wrote one article about oatmeal.
The Wave Pool Is Open for Everyone
Having a wave pool is an interesting decision. Having the wave pool approved is even more interesting because the pacific ocean surrounds Hawaii. You could go to the beach, which would still be closer than the wave pool. Of course, proponents of the wave pool see it as equivalent to a swimming pool. Many know the importance of conserving water because Oahu is an island. Fresh water is scarce; opponents to the wave pool see the wave pool as a waste of a valuable resource because the wave pool uses fresh water. Yet it still gained enough support from local leaders to construct and open the wave pool. It holds 1.7 gallons of fresh water, the same as two Olympic swimming pools.
