Philadelphia woman still seeks justice 5 years after sister’s tragic death remains unsolved

    2024-05-04

In a heartfelt plea on the fifth anniversary of her sister's tragic murder, Latasha Pearson of West Philadelphia is calling on the public for any information that could help solve the still-unsolved case of her sister Merdis Williams, who was brutally killed on May 3, 2019.

The original incident took place on the 4400 block of Parrish Street, where Merdis, aged 54, was found having been stabbed multiple times. The crime scene was grim, with attempts made to conceal her body using newspapers and clothing. Action News coverage from that day captured the intense emotion as Latasha, surrounded by family and friends, processed the shock and grief of the sudden loss.

"Merdis belonged to us," an emotional Latasha told reporters, underscoring the personal void left by her sister's violent departure. "No matter what, no one thought about what losing Merdis would do to us. She was repeatedly stabbed, and someone tried to hide her, but at the time, I was so numb."

Five years have elapsed since that harrowing day, but the passage of time has done little to ease the family's anguish. The case, initially pursued by the Philadelphia Police, eventually went cold, leaving the Williams family without the closure they desperately seek. "This has had a tremendous impact on us all. Today marks the same date and day, five years on, and yet no one has been caught," Latasha added, her frustration palpable.

The intervening years have not been easy, with global events like the COVID-19 pandemic and personal health challenges complicating the family's quest for justice. Despite these hurdles, Latasha remains resolute: "Many things took place—COVID hit, health issues for me—but I will not leave this earth not knowing what happened to my sister."

As the memory of that fateful day continues to haunt the Williams family, Latasha's plea is a stark reminder of the countless families who wait for justice in unresolved cases. She hopes that renewed public interest and police efforts will finally lead to the capture and conviction of the perpetrator, bringing some measure of peace to her family.

The Philadelphia Police Department has not released recent updates on the case, but the family encourages anyone with information, no matter how minor it may seem, to come forward. In the face of tragedy, the Williams family’s resilience and quest for closure remind us of the enduring impact of violent crime on families and communities alike.
