Maye Musk is over seventy years old. She is a model, nutritionist and a gorgeous woman who wrote a biography book with simple but inspiring advice. Fun fact: this text has the largest number of tips in the history of the column.
1. Take care of yourself
Life is not limited to youth, but is tangibly shaped by the capabilities of the body and mind. That is why it is important to pay attention to the development and preservation of yourself at any age. Here is what May notes: “Don’t let age slow you down or hinder your development. Take care of yourself as best you can – eat well, smile often, and be active, happy, and confident . ”
2. Find a suitable job
According to May, “work should be interesting and enjoyable because it is where you spend most of your day .” Do you agree?
3. Always expect to find a way out
“Who would have thought that going gray would give my career a boost? At 15, I was told that my career would be over by 18, and lo and behold, at 71, I’m more famous than ever. What life has taught me is that there’s always a way out. Plans can always be changed. Yes, I didn’t understand that right away, and I’m still learning!” Musk shares with us. Flexibility that persists and even grows with age is an investment that saves you from the feeling of being stuck, imposed by the stereotype that all great things happen in youth and only in youth.
4. Keep yourself busy and then you won't have to worry about age.
A great recipe for all times, how not to think about the years as a burden: "I don't worry about age. I'm too busy with what brings me joy ." You need to focus on what's important!
5. Set priorities
"There are a lot of ways to describe a person. But I'd rather have my tombstone say, 'She was fun,' than 'She was beautiful.'" Knowing what's important to you about yourself, that your net worth and wealth are a useful thing, helps you ground yourself and pursue your goals.
6. Solve problems
Here's how Maye Musk recommends dealing with the situation of confusion about what clothes to choose and how to wear them: "If you lack taste, make friends with those who have it ." A developing environment enriches, and in terms of choosing a wardrobe, too.
7. Invest in yourself (include this expense in your budget)
"Many people think that in order to look decent, you need a lot of money. I will tell you as a person who has experienced financial difficulties for many years: consider clothing expenses as part of the annual budget. The same applies to visits to the hairdresser and the dentist ." - perhaps, in the current reality, this advice looks a little white-coat. "Annual budget" - someone will chuckle, looking at the cucumber prices. At the same time, financial literacy and budgeting are the basis of a self-sufficient life and May's recommendation, although for our latitudes it may sound a little exotic, nevertheless, it works.
8. Don't worry about your self-esteem, maybe age will improve things
"Even if you are naturally quite confident, your self-esteem will still go up and down from time to time. Hopefully, the older you get, the faster it will recover," May says optimistically. Overall, this advice seems to remind us that falling self-esteem is not fatal, and inaction is much more dangerous.
9. Don't strive for the best, choose the good
A separate piece of advice for die-hard perfectionists: “Do what you’re good at, and don’t try to be the best at absolutely everything.”
10. Don't hesitate when you feel interested
Here's another tip to speed things up: "I don't waste time thinking too much before agreeing to something. I say yes to everything that interests me, can entertain me, or can improve my financial situation ." Judging by the results, this filtering of things to say yes to works well for May.
11. Do not tolerate violence in relationships
Well, here's some basic advice: "I want you to know that you need to get out of a relationship with someone who hurts you - if you want to survive. I endured violence in a marriage for nine years. After the divorce, it was like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders and I finally had hope for the future ." May survived an abusive relationship with her husband using physical violence against her, and nevertheless found the strength to overcome this story and save the lives of hers and her three children.
12. Have a plan if you want change
Here's another basic piece of advice that's helpful to rely on before you begin your journey toward your preferred changes: "Whether the changes you're looking for are small (learn to meditate) or large (change your eating habits or move and start over), you need a clear plan."
