The Iowa State Fair Sky Glider is celebrating its 50th year of operation, and Axios reader Jerry Gale has a first-person account of its stalled beginning.Catch up fast: Nobody has ever fallen from the ride, but more than 50 people were stuck for hours during its debut because of an overheated motor. Gale was one of them.Zoom in: While in the air, Gale and his then-future wife watched horseshoe pitching and listened to fair announcements.Fire engine ladders eventually brought stranded people to the ground and there were no injuries.The bottom line: Gale got an extra long and memorable sky ride. A scows, 38 ft long-will be racing Sun afternoon through Wed morning. MC scows, 16 ft long racing Mon-Wed. On Thurs morning C scows, 20 ft long- and E scows, 28 ft long will take to the water.

Lightning and thunderstorms cut the seventh day of the Iowa State Fair short with the Motley Crue's Grandstand concert ending early due to the weather. Floyd County Girls Among 16 Choose Iowa Coloring Calendar Contest Winners at Iowa State Fair
A pair of Floyd County girls are among just 16 Iowa students whose artwork has been selected for the 2024-2025 Choose Iowa Coloring Calendar. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig recognized the students Tuesday (08.13) during a ceremony at the Iowa State Fair. The Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship received over 200 submissions from students 18 or younger across the state, with Sydney Kehret of Charles City and Paisley Ott of Marble Rock among the 16 winners.
