Crews working to contain 330-acre fire in Black Hills
EDGEMONT, S.D. (KELO) — Firefighters in western South Dakota are working on containing a fire that started Thursday afternoon. The USDA says the Bennett Fire was started by a lightning strike eight miles southeast of Dewey, in Fall River County. As of Friday, the Bennett Fire is estimated at 330 acres in size, burning in the Black Hills National Forest.
Augustana Hall of Famer Ken Kessinger Passes Away
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana Hall of Famer Ken Kessinger passed away on August 13 at the age of 99. Kessinger attended school at Augustana following his service in World War II with the Air Force. He graduated from Augustana in 1949 with 12 letters, four in football, four in basketball and four in track and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1979.
Fire officials have determined the cause of a fire in a Mitchell home Thursday afternoon
Mitchell fire officials have determined the cause of a fire that damaged a second-floor bedroom late Thursday afternoon in a home in the 700 block of West Fifth Avenue. Fire Marshal Shannon Sandoval says there were some juveniles up there playing with a lighter. “It sounds like at one time, that lighter was used to start the bed on fire,” said Sandoval. “Whether that was intentional or not, we’re not sure at this time. We’re working with the Mitchell Police Department.”
29-year-old killed in motorcycle crash on I-90 near Sioux Falls
MINNEHAHA COUNTY, S.D. - A 29-year-old man was killed Monday evening in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash two miles east of Sioux Falls. According to preliminary reports, Vasiliy V. Manuylo was riding a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle eastbound on Interstate 90 near mile marker 401. The motorcycle veered off the road to the right, entered the south ditch, struck a fence, and threw Manuylo from the bike. He died at the scene from his injuries. He was wearing a helmet.
