ReStore returns to operation
You can once again search for treasures while supporting affordable housing in Door County after Door County Habitat for Humanity reopened its offices and ReStore on Tuesday. Two weeks ago, Door County Habitat for Humanity was among the many homes and businesses impacted when approximately four inches of rain fell on Sturgeon Bay over two hours, forcing flood waters to go in every direction. The result meant that the organization known for building and rehabbing homes had to do the same for its facility. Volunteers worked through the holiday week to prepare the building for reopening, filling three 20-foot dumpsters. Executive Director Lori Allen says it took the entire community to help it bounce back.

A very heavy piece of Great Lakes shipping history relocates back to Sturgeon Bay
STURGEON BAY - Anchors are raised and anchors are dropped around Door County all summer long, but this anchor raising and dropping holds more significance than usual. That's because it's the historic 1,000-pound anchor from the Oak Leaf, a schooner-turned-barge that had a career of at least 54 years in the Great Lakes shipping industry before it sank off Bullhead Point in Sturgeon Bay in 1928. The anchor recently was moved from its previous place of display outside the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse museum in Peninsula State Park to Bullhead Point, a small spit of land jutting into the Sturgeon Bay channel which is now on the National Register of Historic Places as an Historical and Archaeological District.
Baby born along State Highway 57
A mother in Northern Door County will have an exciting story to tell their child about the day they were brought into the world. After 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Fire Department and Door County Emergency Services were called to the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Fire Station, where a woman was driving to deliver her baby. Those plans were cut short as emergency personnel were quickly diverted and were sent to the intersection of State Highway 57 and Wildwood Road, where the baby was eventually delivered. Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Fire Chief Chris Hecht was there when it happened, something he says has only happened four or five times in his 30-plus-year career. He adds that it is a special experience to be a part of when it happens because of its rarity.
