    Voters head to polls on Primary Election Day

    CAMBRIDGE — In Dorchester County, Board of Education candidates Mike Diaz, current president of the board, and Brandy Cumberland received the most votes for the District 1 seat as of Tuesday evening, with 40.59% and 36.79% respectively. Incumbent candidate Chris Wheedleton won 60.17% of votes counted as of Tuesday evening for the District 5 Board of Education race. Mike Hartford and Jerome J. Harris were neck-and-neck for the second most votes, with 20.64% and 19.19% of the ballots counted as of Tuesday evening respectively.

    Voters throughout the Mid-Shore gathered at polling locations Tuesday, the final day to cast their ballots in the 2024 primary election. When polls closed at 8 p.m., elections workers began to tally the results, giving a preliminary look at how voters in each county voted in several key races.

    Returns from primary election day, early voting and some mail-in ballots were available on the Maryland State Election Board website Tuesday night. Final primary election results will not be available until counties finish tallying mail-in and provisional ballots in the coming weeks.

    151,503 Maryland voters cast their votes during the early voting period from May 2 to May 9 and 594,724 mail-in ballots had been sent out to registered Maryland voters.

    In the presidential races, Democratic voters in Dorchester County chose Joe Biden as their presidential nominee. Republican voters in Dorchester County chose Donald Trump as their presidential nominee.

    On primary election day, 743 Democratic ballots were cast in the presidential race, and 1,831 Republican ballots were cast.

    In the U.S. Senate Democratic Primary, David Trone received the most votes in Dorchester County, with 55.57% of votes counted as of Tuesday evening. In the U.S. Senate Republican Primary, Robin Ficker received the most votes in Dorchester County as of Tuesday evening with 52.8% of the vote.

    Blane Miller received the most votes from Dorchester County Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives District 1 race with 54.21% of the vote. Andy Harris received the most votes from Dorchester County Republicans with 83.25% of the vote. On primary election day, 661 votes were cast in the Democratic race and 1,818 votes were cast for the Republican race.

    About 840, or 4.1%, of the eligible voters in the county participated in early voting. There were 1,523 Democratic and 771 Republican ballots mailed to Dorchester County voters. Dorchester County had not yet counted any mail-in ballots as of Tuesday morning.

    Along with the District 1 and 5 Board of Education races in the general election Nov. 5, candidates Christine LaMonica and Susan Morgan, current board vice president, will vie for the District 3 seat.
