    Winter Wheat Emerging in 10 States

    According to the USDA, winter wheat is beginning to emerge across the U.S. Ten of the top 18 winter wheat growing states reported emergence in the Crop Progress report published this week.

    Nationally, 4% of the winter wheat crop has emerged. This is one percentage point behind the five-year average and trails last year’s emergence pace by two percentage points.

    Washington

    USDA said 22% of the winter wheat crop in Washington state had emerged. This year’s emergence pace in Washington is ahead of the five-year average of 16% and last year’s emergence pace of 17%. The surge of 13 percent is higher than a week prior.

    Nebraska

    According to this week’s Crop Progress report, 14% of Nebraska’s winter wheat crop had emerged. This is an 11 percentage point increase from the previous week and double the five-year average. By this time last year, 12% of the Nebraska winter wheat crop had emerged.

    Colorado

    USDA reported that 9% of the winter wheat crop in Colorado had emerged the week ending Sept. 22, up six percentage points from the week prior. However, this is eight percentage points behind the five-year average. At this time last year, 16% of the Colorado winter wheat crop had emerged.

    South Dakota

    In South Dakota, 7% of the state’s winter wheat crop had emerged, according to reports. That’s one percentage point ahead of the five-year average. Last year, at this time, 4% of South Dakota’s winter wheat crop had emerged.

    Texas

    Texas reported its first winter wheat emergence of the season the week ending Sept. 22. With 5% emerged, progress is equal to this time last year and slightly ahead of the five-year average of 4%.

    Montana

    At this time last year, no emergence had been reported in the state. This year, the USDA reported that 4% of the winter wheat crop in Montana had emerged the week ending Sept. 22, equal to the five-year average.

    Oregon

    In Oregon, 3% of the state’s winter wheat crop had emerged. That’s equal to the five-year average and last year at this time.

    Idaho

    USDA reported that 2% of Idaho’s winter wheat crop emerged the week ending Sept. 22. This is slightly behind the five-year average of 4% but equal to last year.

    Kansas

    In Kansas, 2% of the state’s winter wheat crop had emerged. That’s slightly behind both last year at this time and the five-year average of 3%.

    Indiana

    Indiana farmers reported the first winter wheat emergence of the season the week ending Sept. 22. Just 1% of the crop is out of the ground, equal to last year’s progress and slightly ahead of the five-year average.

    Oklahoma

    At this time last year, 4% of Oklahoma’s winter wheat crop had emerged. No emergence progress has been reported for the 2024 season.
