    Fort Laurens hosts reenactment

    BOLIVAR – The site of Ohio’s only Revolutionary War-era fort, Fort Laurens, is hosting its 49th annual Revolutionary War reenactment from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 13 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 14. Visitors can watch a mock skirmish for American Independence with volunteer reenactors from the Brigade of the American Revolution.

    Visitors can also learn about 18th-century American life from a variety of demonstrations including cooking, medicine and discussions with Colonial and British soldiers.

    Food, vendors, musical entertainment, kids' games and other family-friendly activities will be available.

    Admission is $10 for adults and free for children 12 and younger, with all the proceeds going toward the preservation and educational efforts of Fort Laurens. All event activities and access to the Fort Laurens Museum are included in the ticket price.

    Ohio butterfly exhibit at Norma Johnson Center

    DOVER – TuscParks will host a butterfly exhibit open to the public from Thursday through July 21 at the Norma Johnson Center, 3645 Conservation Drive. Through the sponsorship of the O'Donnell Family Charitable Foundation, the free exhibit will be held under the Picnic Shelter on Conservation Drive off old state Route 39 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

    Fran LeMaster’s traveling butterfly exhibit, All A Flutter, allows visitors to step inside the enclosure and view several native Ohio butterflies up close. Chrysalis will also be on display, and hatchings will occur throughout the week inside the exhibit. Free crafts and face painting will be available. Visitors can purchase certain crafts and monarch chrysalis throughout the week while supplies last. Donations will be accepted at the door. Children younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult

    Concert in the park Thursday

    Register for vacation Bible school

    DOVER− Grace Lutheran Church, 216 N. Wooster Ave., will hold Camp Firelight, a vacation Bible school, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 22 through 26 for ages 3 through completion of fifth grade.     Tusky Valley Ruritan Club news

    MINERAL CITY – The Tusky Valley Ruritan Club will offer a limited menu in its food trailer at the Sparks of Giving fireworks display July 20 near the Wilkshire Golf Course. The trailer will also be at the Atwood Fall Festival in October. Club members will meet for the annual ladies night/steak fry will be at 6 p.m. July 16 at the Warren Township Community Center in New Cumberland. That evening, the club will present its annual Citizen of the Year award.

    Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks mentors

    NEW PHILADELPHIA − Big Brothers Big Sisters is holding its annual Match Madness campaign this month. The goal is to recruit 10 new adult mentors, known as bigs, who can make a significant impact in the lives of children. According to Big Brothers Big Sisters, 55 children are on the waiting list. Bigs commit to spending four hours a month with the child.

    City schools gets grant for tick project

    NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Ohio Environmental Education Fund has awarded a $50,000 grant to New Philadelphia City Schools to continue to expand its Appalachian Ohio tick project. It takes students into the field and laboratory to collect and analyze tick DNA to see how many carry diseases such as Lyme disease. The project informs the public about the trends and how to protect themselves while outdoors. The students benefit from learning molecular biology and the modern tools of biotechnology.

    Church cancels community dinner

    UHRICHSVILLE – First Moravian Church, 315 N. Water St., has canceled Ladles of Love for this month. The free takeout community dinner will return in August.

    Vacation Bible school is July 22-26

    UHRICHSVILLE − Uhrichsville First Methodist Church, 225 N. Dawson St., will hold vacation Bible school from 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 22-26 for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. For more information or to register, call Sandy Brown at 330-260-0369.

    Pastor retires

    UHRICHSVILLE – The Rev. Mark Unrue retired July 1 from Uhrichsville Presbyterian Church, where he and his family served his church and community for more than 35 years. He has been involved with the Community Thanksgiving Meal, The Salvation Army Service Unit, Claymont Schools, Harcatus, Trinity Hospital Twin City Foundation Board, Twin City Ministerial, Twin City Christian Service Center, Uhrichsville Senior Center and Muskingum Valley Presbytery.

    Church offers takeout dinners Thursday

    UHRICHSVILLE – Uhrichsville Moravian Church, 315 N. Water St., will offer Dinner on the Run (takeout only) from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday or until the food is gone. Dinner, $8, is ham loaf, parsley red-skinned potato or macaroni and cheese, green beans, roll and dessert. This event was rescheduled due to the Independence Day holiday.
