Michigan unemployment rate advances in June
LANSING – Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose by two-tenths of a percentage point over the month to 4.1 percent during June, according to data released Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. Employment receded by 9,000 over the month, while unemployment rose by 8,000, resulting in an essentially unchanged workforce in June. ”Michigan’s unemployment rate increased for the first time in 2024 and matched the U.S. rate of 4.1 percent,” said Wayne Rourke, labor market information director for the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics. “The labor force and payroll jobs remained stable in June.” The national unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 4.1 percent during June, matching Michigan’s jobless rate. Over the year, the U.S. unemployment rate rose by half a percentage point. The statewide rate advanced by 0.4 percentage points since June 2023.
Cold case reopened by MPS out of northern Michigan
(FOX 2) - State police in northern Michigan have reopened a missing person cold case that is over 35 years old. Announcing the investigation on social media, the Michigan State Police's Seventh District said they were looking at the disappearance of Cassandra Durham, a Maryland woman who had left the state with her boyfriend in 1987.

Relocation of historic Italianate mansion draws crowd to downtown Muskegon
MUSKEGON, MI -- Dozens of residents gathered Wednesday to watch a 155-year-old Italianate mansion be wheeled through the streets of downtown Muskegon. The mansion, known as the Nelson House, was first a private residence and later served as the rectory for the long-vacant St. Jean Baptiste Catholic Church. Purchased by Muskegon Public Schools, it was set to be demolished before the city of Muskegon expressed interest. City leaders just purchased it in June for a nominal fee of $100. The cost of the move and setting a new foundation is near $230,000.
Flood damage causes emergency street closure for repairs in Kalamazoo
KALAMAZOO, MI -- Traffic will be blocked for emergency street repairs in Kalamazoo following recent heavy rain and flooding damage, the city said in a news release. The intersection of East Michigan/Riverview Drive at the viaduct will close at 5 p.m. Friday, July 19, to all southbound traffic on Riverview Drive, and to westbound East Michigan Avenue traffic, the city said.
