Facenda Spirits' Limoncello shop to bring a taste of Amalfi Coast to Doylestown Borough

More than 4,000 miles separate bustling Bucks County from the serene landscapes and terraced orchards of Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

But a taste of the experience will soon be within reach.

Facenda Spirits — a new handcrafted small batch limoncello distillery locally owned by Chalfont couple, Richard and Stacy Facenda — will be opening in downtown Doylestown.

Limoncello has long been a tradition originating in southern Italy before making its way around the world, explained Richard, who’s been making his own batches of the liquor over the past two decades, fine-tuning his recipe over time to enjoy with friends and family.

“I’m still perfecting it. It’ll never be perfect because I’ll never stop looking for ways to make it better or different,” he said.

Made from lemon peels, grain alcohol, sugar and water, limoncello is customarily sipped as an after-dinner drink , but it can also be incorporated into cocktails for a light, refreshing beverage to be enjoyed any time of day.

“It’s an Italian aperitif,” Richard said. “The thought is that the lemon oil would aid in their digestion after a big meal.”

Facenda Spirit’s limoncello brand, The 'Cello, is specifically made using lemons imported from the Amalfi Coast , which Richard said they hand peel themselves to ensure only the best parts of the lemon are used. All of their products are all-natural, using organic fruits and no additives or artificial colors, he said.

Citrus varieties, using limes, oranges, grapefruit and other fruits as they come into season will also be available, as well as a crema di limoncello.

Facenda Spirits will be located on North Main Street in a below-ground space formerly occupied by Two Ladies Bakery, where they will produce The Cello, offer tastings and have bottles available for purchase.

In addition to the retail side of the business, they also hope to partner with other local establishments to bring their limoncello to restaurants and bars.

An official opening date has not been set yet, but Richard said they are hoping to be up and running around mid-July or mid-August once they obtain a final approval from the state for their liquor license, which is currently pending.
