Putin opens Moscow to St Petersburg motorway after 14 years of work
After roughly 14 years of construction work, one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's most important infrastructure projects - a 670 kilometre roadway between Moscow and St Petersburg - is now open. Putin inaugurated the last section of the motorway - a bypass around the provincial town of Tver - by driving a Russian-produced Lada Aura car. The plans to relieve the old route between Russia's most important cities go back a long way. The route passed through many villages and was only partially...
Haas F1 will continue to be powered by Ferrari engines until 2028
Formula One team Haas will continue to be powered by Ferrari engines until 2028, it was announced on Tuesday. America team Haas have cooperated with Ferrari since their F1 debut in 2016 and the partnership will now reach a dozen years. Haas make their own chassis while the power unit comes from Ferrari. “As an organization we’ve only ever raced with Ferrari power units and to have that continued stability moving into the next set of power unit regulations is a key part of our on-going development," team principal Ayao Komatsu said. New regulations come into force in 2026, with 50% of the hybrid engine power to be electric and the fuel used sustainable. Cars will also be lighter, for less downforce and drag. "The relationship with Scuderia Ferrari has always been a special one to us – they were instrumental in the genesis of the program back in the early days and have continued to be a valuable technical partner to us throughout the past nine seasons," Komatsu said. Haas with their drivers Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen are seventh in the constructors' standings at the halfway mark of the season. The next race is on Sunday in Hungary.
Palestinian reports: Many killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza Strip
Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of scores of Palestinians, according to Palestinian reports. At least 13 Palestinians were killed and 26 more injured when tents were hit in the town of Khan Younis in the south of the coastal region, according to medical sources in Gaza. Around 15 people were also killed and around 40 others injured in an airstrike on a school run by the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a Telegram post that terrorists were operating from the school there. "Prior to the strike, numerous steps were taken in order to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of aerial surveillance, precise munitions, and additional intelligence," the post said. The Israeli army also commented on the Khan Younis strike, saying it had targeted "a company commander in the Islamic Jihad's Naval Unit." "We are looking into the reports stating that several civilians were injured as a result of the strike," the IDF said. "The details are under review." None of this information - either from the Palestinian or the Israeli side - could be initially independently verified.

Germany's Scholz found book written by Trump's VP pick 'touching'
The man Donald Trump has chosen to be his running mate in November's presidential election is the author of a book that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz found "touching." In his 2016 autobiographical book "Hillbilly Elegy," JD Vance described the crisis of the white working class in the US as industries shuttered. It became a bestseller there - and Scholz was also a fan. But Scholz has long since taken a more critical view of the author, who once criticized Trump as "cultural heroin" but later became a US senator with Trump's support. Vance, 39, was announced on Monday as Trump's pick for vice...

Far-right AfD leaders call ban on magazine 'blow' to press freedom
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has sharply criticized the government's ban on the far-right Compact magazine. The decision, announced on Tuesday by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, is "a serious blow to the freedom of the press," said the far-right party's leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla in a joint statement. The two said banning a press organ was "a denial of discourse and diversity of opinion" and accused Faeser of abusing her powers "to suppress critical reporting." Faeser had issued a ban on editor-in-chief Jürgen Elsässer's magazine and had premises associated with the media organization searched in four states. The ban was justified on the grounds that the monthly magazine disseminates "anti-Semitic, racist, anti-minority, historical revisionist and conspiracy theory content."
