Germany captain Popp ruled out of Olympic semi with US with infection

Germany's women's footballers must take on the US in their Olympic semi-final later on Tuesday without their captain Alexandra Popp.

She has been ruled out with an unspecified infection, the German Football Federation said in a statement.

Nicole Anyomi is set to replace her with Giulia Gwinn due to take the armband.

Popp, Germany's footballer of the year and the only player in the squad remaining from the 2016 Olympic triumph, had already missed Monday's training because of a throat problem.

The final is on Saturday. Brazil meet Spain in the other semi.
