The German rail service said on Saturday that a technical problem that caused extensive disruption to traffic in the Rhine-Main area has been resolved, but that delays are likely for the rest of the day.

Operator Deutsche Bahn said the long-distance and regional links affected by the IT issue were running again.

However, passengers should check their connections before starting a journey, a company spokesman said.

Earlier, a technical fault caused significant disruptions to rail traffic in central Germany.

All regional and S-Bahn traffic in the Rhine-Main area was affected, Deutsche Bahn said.

The latest delays come amid growing criticism of the rail provider after major delays and problems during the European football tournament earlier in the summer, prompting calls for its boss and board to step down.
