Olympic ski jumping champion Daniel-Andre Tande of Norway has announced his retirement on Wednesday evening.

Some five months before the home world championships in Trondheim, the 30-year-old said on Instagram that he's still suffering mentally from the consequences of his serious crash in Planica in 2021.

The Norwegian crashed during a training jump, suffering several injuries and remaining in a medically-induced coma for four days. He recovered and resumed jumping at the 2021 ski jumping World Cup.

"After my bad fall in Planica just over three years ago, I needed time to realize that my fear of ski jumping was perhaps greater than I initially thought. That's why it feels right to end my ski jumping career now," Tande said.

He has eight World Cup victories, four ski flying world championship titles and won team Olympic gold medal in 2018 since his first World Cup start in January 2014.

"I have fulfilled many dreams in my career," he said.

"I'm keeping all my options open for the future and I'm excited about what's to come. With everything I've experienced on and off the slopes, I hope to be able to contribute in different areas in the coming years," Tande added.
