Promoted St Pauli lost a third Bundesliga game out of three so far this season as Augsburg picked up their first three points with a 3-1 home win on Sunday.
Former Borussia Dortmund right back Marius Wolf cut inside and curled home with his weaker left foot just after the break for his first Augsburg goal. St Pauli complained about a possible handball and foul in the build-up but the video assistant allowed the goal.
Phillip Tietz then made it 2-0 on 67 minutes when he volleyed in a deep cross from close range before Carlo Boukhalfa cut the deficit with St Pauli's first goal of the league season.
Substitute Yusuf Kabadayi sealed the win on the break in stoppage time.
Hamburg-based St Pauli, seen as a cult club in Germany due to their brown jerseys and left-wing fans, were left reeling in the close season when promotion-winning coach Fabian Hürzeler left for Brighton.
New boss Alexander Blessin, a German who impressed at Belgium's Union Saint-Gilloise last term, took over but his side sit second-bottom.
"I was disappointed with the first half. We were far too passive," Blessin told DAZN.
Augsburg's Danish coach Jess Thorup, who penned a new deal until 2026 on Thursday having easily kept them up last term, secured his first win of the nascent league campaign to move up to 11th on 4 points.
He said: "I saw a team on the pitch who showed a good reaction to recent games."
Mixed day for Zetterer
Mainz were watched in the stands by their former coach Jürgen Klopp, who is taking a break after leaving Liverpool, but he could not inspire them to a first win of the league season as they lost 2-1 to Werder Bremen.
Marvin Ducksch struck from the spot on 8 minutes for Bremen but South Korea midfielder Lee Jae Sung levelled for the hosts midway through the first half.
He tapped in after Bremen's Michael Zetterer dropped a cross when colliding with a team-mate.
The keeper made amends with some good saves in the second half and
Derrick Köhn grabbed the winner on the counterattack on 69 - despite Bremen being reduced to 10 men on the hour when Marco Friedl saw red for a professional foul.
It was Bremen's first three points of the campaign and they jumped up to the top half, while Bo Henriksen's Mainz are fourth-bottom after two draws previously.
Germany's five Champions League entrants played on Friday or Saturday to give them extra preparation time for the revamped competition starting this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Bayern thumped promoted bottom side Holstein Kiel 6-1 away on Saturday, with Harry Kane scoring a fifth Bundesliga hat-trick, as they became the only German top-flight team to take a maximum 9 points from three games so far this term.
