US gymnast Chiles takes Olympic bronze dispute to Swiss high court

US gymnast Jordan Chiles has filed an appeal with the Swiss federal tribunal over the results in the women's floor exercise final at the 2024 Paris Olympics, in which she initially won bronze, her attorneys said on Monday evening.

Chiles is asking the tribunal to overturn an earlier ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that knocked her off the podium and awarded the bronze medal to Ana Barbosu of Romania.

The US athlete was moved into third place after challenging the score of one of the elements in her routine and joined the podium ceremony with champion Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and team-mate and silver medallist Simone Biles on August 5.

However, she bumped back to fifth a few days later after the CAS ruled that her challenge was submitted four seconds too late.

Since then, the International Olympic Committee has asked Chiles to return her bronze medal and awarded one to Barbosu.

Chiles' appeal to the tribunal, which is the highest court in Switzerland, marks a relatively rare step as the CAS is designed to be the final arbiter of any legal disputes in international sports and often has the final word on cases like this.

However, Chile's attorneys said that the CAS violated their client's right to be heard when it declined to consider new video evidence obtained after the hearing that allegedly shows her inquiry was submitted on time.

The attorneys added that the appeal was accompanied by a letter of support from the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
