Former champions Eintracht Frankfurt threw away a two-goal lead in the final minutes as they were held 3-3 by Viktoria Plzen in their Europa League opener on Thursday.

Prince Kwabena Adu netted in the 86th off Vaclav Jemelka who then smashed the improbable equalizer into the roof of the net in the third minute of stoppage time.

Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua Santos, standing in for German international Kevin Trapp, did not look good on both occasions.

The hosts took a deserved lead on a rainy night in the 38th minute when in-form Hugo Ekitike fired into the bottom right corner. It was his fourth goal in six season matches in all competitions, to go with four assists.

Plzen, quarter-finalists in the Conference League last season, levelled three minutes later from Pavel Sulc's curling shot.

Frankfurt, winners of Europe's second tier event in 1980 and 2022, were back on top in the 62nd when Junior Dina Ebimbe fired into the far left corner two minutes after coming on, set up nicely by Ekitike.

Defender Rasmus Kristensen made it 3-1 off a corner kick in the 65th but Frankfurt then threw away the three points in the end.

"It was't good enough. Leading 3-1 with five minutes left should be good enough for the three points. I am happy with my goal but now it is a strange feeling," Kristensen told broadcasters RTL.

The Europa League has undergone the same overhaul as the Champions League, with now 36 teams, instead of 32, playing eight matches in a league stage which replaces the group stage.

The top eight advance into the last 16 and are joined there by the eight winners of play-offs between the teams ranked ninth to 24th.
