While the water levels of rivers in Poland are falling again, the country's authorities are taking stock of the victims and damage from the devastating floods.

Nine bodies have been found so far, police chief Marek Boron said following a Cabinet meeting in Warsaw. He said the number of confirmed fatalities has thus increased by two. In addition, one person is still missing.

The identity of the two most recently found bodies has not yet been clearly established, Boron said.

In the areas most threatened by floods, residents are still in danger from the after-effects, warned Boron.

In the last 24 hours, he said, another 20 people have been evacuated from their homes due to the risk of collapse. In total, 4,778 people have had to leave their homes at least temporarily because of the floods.

According to the PAP news agency, the government has so far released 623 million zloty ($163 million) in flood aid for those affected.

Thanks to the deployment of police and army helicopters, "199 lives" have been saved from immediate danger, said Boron. In addition, psychologists have been sent to assist those affected on-site.

The floods temporarily blocked 89 roads. According to Boron, the police have also documented 22 cases of looting and other crimes, in which the plight of many people was exploited. These included fake fundraisers for supposed victims.
