Captain Alexandra Popp will announce her retirement from the Germany national team later this week, according to the Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper and broadcaster NDR.

The German Football Federation (DFB) said it would not comment but the reports stated new coach Christian Wück has already been informed.

The 33-year-old, Germany's three-time Footballer of the Year, has been battling injury problems lately and wishes to go out on a high after the team's bronze medal at the Paris Olympics in August.

With a new coach coming in, her participation in the European Championship next year in Switzerland was questionable.

Wolfsburg striker Popp, who helped Germany to gold at the 2016 Olympics, has played in 144 international matches and scored 67 goals.
