Heavy rains and subsequent flooding in June caused an estimated €4.1 billion ($4.6 billion) in damage across southern Germany, according to figures from two of the hardest-hit states and insurance companies.

"Almost €1.8 billion of the uninsured damage fall to Bavaria," the state's finance minister, Albert Füracker told dpa in Munich.

Insurers estimate around €2 billion of the total damage was covered, while €300 million in losses were reported in Baden-Württemberg.

The floods, which struck between May 30 and June 11 following relentless rainfall, have prompted calls for federal support.

Füracker noted that the 2013 flooding in Germany caused damage valued at around €8 billion in 11 of Germany's 16 states, while there had now been more than €4 billion thus far in 2024 in two states.

He predicted the figure could rise by the end of the year.
