Southern suburbs of Beirut abandoned, full of debris after bombings

The area south of the Lebanese capital Beirut, where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli air raid, now resembles a ghost town, according to a dpa reporter.

Tens of thousands of families have fled the country to escape the attacks, including from Dahiyeh, where the Israeli military is attacking targets of the Shiite militia Hezbollah.

A dpa reporter described "massive destruction" with debris from destroyed buildings everywhere while drones sound overhead.

Anger is palpable among locals of the suburb who supported Nasrallah. Men wearing black stood surrounded by rubble as they recited verses from the Quran.

Many were downcast and unwilling to talk.

Of the few residents who have not yet fled the suburb, some said they felt abandoned by Iran. "They stabbed us in the back," said a man dressed in black, sitting on the floor with other Hezbollah members.

A woman named Fatima held a photo of Nasrallah and said through tears that “the spies are in our ranks.”

Another woman listened to verses from the Quran and said she hoped the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip knew that Nasrallah had died for their struggle.
