Flights have been suspended at Milan-Bergamo airport in northern Italy after an aeroplane's tyres burst during a landing on Tuesday, damaging the runway.

None of the aeroplane's passengers or crew members were injured, said the airport's operating company Sacbo.

An initial reconstruction of the incident showed that the plane's four rear tyres burst upon landing but that the pilot was able to keep the plane on the runway, resulting in only minor damage to the aircraft.

After landing, the fire brigade intervened to evacuate the passengers and crew, Sacbo said.

"Due to an aircraft stranded on the runway for technical issues, operations are temporarily suspended," the airport said on its website. "Departing flights are delayed, and arriving flights may be diverted or cancelled until the runway is reopened."

It said travellers should expect delays and cancellations until the 450 metres of the runway that were damaged can be repaired.

Milan-Bergamo airport is one of three international airports in the Milan metropolitan area of northern Italy. It is located about 45 kilometres from Milan and is used by low-cost airlines.
