Iran has closed the airspace over Tehran after it launched a barrage of missiles at Israel on Tuesday evening.

Flights at the capital's airport have been cancelled until 10 am (0700 GMT) Wednesday, the ISNA news agency reported on Tuesday evening, citing a spokesman for the airport.

Iran's attack was in retaliation for the killing of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, an official said.

Iran’s so-called axis of resistance is a network of Iran-allied groups that includes the Palestinian Hamas organization, Hezbollah and the Houthis in Yemen.

The salvo came hours after the IDF began a "limited, localized" ground operation against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

Following months of cross-border skirmishes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, which says it acts out of solidarity with Hamas in Gaza, Israel began an intense aerial campaign to strike Hezbollah targets across Lebanon last week.

The continued escalation has heightened fears that the region is on the brink of all-out regional war.
