Yes, I'm in a forest: WhatsApp finally gets video chat backgrounds

WhatsApp is rolling out a major upgrade to its video chat that caters both to informal and workplace conversations with a total of 20 different filters and backgrounds that can be turned on in video calls, the Meta subsidiary has announced.

While video filters like fisheye and black & white are more designed for fun, the video chat backgrounds - long familiar to anyone who uses Zoom - are designed more to hide what others might see of your home during work calls.

Among WhatsApp's 10 filters are "Warm" (to create a cosy atmosphere) and "Prismatic Light" (to give the call an artistic touch), while the 10 new backgrounds can make it look like you're sitting in a boring-looking office, on the beach or in a forest.

In addition, the quality of your own camera image should improve with the help of the "Touch Up" and "Low Light" options. The new effects can be accessed via the effects icon in the top right-hand corner during one-on-one or group calls. WhatsApp says it plans to make the new features available to all users over the coming weeks.
