One year after the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, activists gathered at the Brandenburg Gate in central Berlin on Monday morning to read the names of 1,170 people who were killed and 255 who were abducted.

The commemoration began at 5:29 am (0329 GMT), marking the moment the attack started on October 7, 2023.

Hamas' assault on communities and a music festival in southern Israel is considered to be the worst mass attack on Jews since the crimes of the Nazi era. Currently, around 100 people remain in captivity in the Gaza Strip and it is not known whether they are alive or dead.

The reading of names was part of a coordinated effort taking place simultaneously in dozens of cities worldwide, including Leipzig, Dusseldorf, Warsaw, Belfast, Lima, and New York.

The organizers said that the aim of the event is to "share the grief of the Jewish people, stand in solidarity with the Jewish state regardless of current politics, and raise voices against anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism."
