The new director of the Berlin Film Festival, Tricia Tuttle, is aiming to attract more younger people to the event, she told the newspaper Die Zeit.

Tuttle emphasized the need for the festival, known as the Berlinale, to create a sense that the German capital is the centre of the movie universe every February.

"This feeling should definitely bring a new, younger audience on board," said the 54-year-old, who took the reins of the festival in April.

The film festival intends to have a greater presence on social media platforms and work with partners who already reach younger people, she said. Incentives such as price reductions are also possible.

Tuttle, who is from the United States, sees the Berlinale as having untapped potential: "We're thinking about how to refresh the brand and this could also affect communication, simply the way we talk about the festival and the films."

For the first time, a woman is solely at the helm of the festival, with the next edition planned from February 13 to 23, 2025.
