Officers in the western German city of Krefeld have shot and injured a suspect in front of a cinema, a police spokesman said late Thursday.

The incident occurred after unconfirmed reports that the suspect threw an incendiary device into the building of the Federal Employment Agency at 7:50 pm (1750 GMT).

When the man turned up at the cinema, the police stopped him. An ambulance then took the man, who had been shot, to hospital. No one else was injured.

The initial situation is very unclear, there are few details, and the story is developing.

Investigators assume that the man shot in front of a cinema near the central train station in Krefeld was a lone perpetrator, a spokesman for the Essen police said.

Police do not expect any further danger for local people after the incident in Krefeld.

The motive for the incident was initially unclear.
