Netanyahu: Death of Hamas military chief 'not absolutely certain'
Israel is not yet sure whether Mohammed Deif, the military chief of the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip, was actually killed in an airstrike. "There is still no absolute certainty," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a press conference in Tel Aviv. The army had previously announced that it was still investigating whether Deif and Rafa Salama, the commander of the Khan Younis Brigade, had been killed in the airstrike west of Khan Younis. Hours earlier, the Israeli military bombed a fenced-off object in the humanitarian zone between Khan Younis and al-Mawasi, which Israel claimed served as a base for Hamas terrorists. According to the Hamas-controlled health authority, 90 people were killed in the attack and a further 300 were injured. The army had extremely reliable intelligence information that Deif and Salama were in the base at the time of the attack, a senior military representative said in an online briefing for journalists. The information from all sides could not initially be independently verified.

Lukashenko sees easing of tensions on the border with Ukraine
Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko has hinted at easing tensions on the border with Ukraine. During a visit to troops in the border region, he emphasized the withdrawal of Ukrainian units from the region, according to the state agency BelTA. "Now we have no complications with the Ukrainians, and I hope that there won't be any," he was quoted as saying by BelTA. At the same time, Lukashenko announced the withdrawal of units that had been deployed to the Ukrainian-Belarusian border in recent weeks. Lukashenko had recently reinforced the border units due to alleged troop gatherings on the Ukrainian side of the common border and alleged provocations. Kiev, on the other hand, claimed that Ukrainian units had merely expanded their defence positions along the border. At the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Belarus authorized the deployment of Russian units from its territory.

Argentina classifies Hamas as terrorist organization
Argentina has classified the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas as a terrorist organization. "Hamas has claimed responsibility for the atrocities committed during the attack on Israel on October 7. These are part of a long history of terrorist attacks in the name of Hamas," the office of President Javier Milei announced on Friday evening. The United States, Canada and the European Union listed Hamas as a terrorist organization long ago. But Argentina is one of the few countries to have taken this step in Latin America, along with Paraguay and Costa Rica. Other countries such as Colombia and Bolivia broke off their relations with Israel due to its offensive in the Gaza Strip. Milei is seen as a staunch ally of Israel and unreservedly supports the policy of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government in the war in Gaza. The Jewish community in the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires is one of the largest outside Israel.

Iraq said on Saturday it is planning to host talks between Turkey and Syria to help normalize ties between its two neighbours after a rupture of more than a decade.
