Floods, hailstones cause havoc across Germany
Heavy rains caused havoc across Germany on Friday, with flooding reported in numerous regions. A major storm in the southern German state of Bavaria left roads and cellars flooded, with fallen trees causing disruptions. According to a police spokesman in the city of Kempten, south-west of Munich, roads were turned white by hailstones, with around 320 operations reported by emergency services between 6 pm (1600 GMT) and midnight. Most affected were the Allgäu region and the Lindau district, near Lake Constance and the border to Austria. Follow-up operations, including pumping out cellars, continued into the night. Another 230 operations were recorded by the police...
'Right warning shot' - German women's coach still upbeat for Olympics
German women's team coach Horst Hrubesch hopes that their 3-0 defeat in Iceland was a warning at the right time ahead of the Olympic tournament which starts in less than a fortnight. The loss in chilly Reykjavik on Friday night was the heaviest loss for the team since being beaten by the same score by France in 2018. The team can make up for it in on Tuesday at home against Austria in the final Euro 2025 qualifier. Germany had clinched their place at the finals in Switzerland before the last two games. In the editorial, Pezeshkian said his first foreign policy priority is to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. He criticized Tehran's arch-enemy Israel, which he said was adding...

Spain defender Marc Cucurella has expressed little understanding for the German fans who booed him throughout during the Euro 2024 semi-final match against France. "At the start, I was surprised," left back Cucurella told The Athletic portal ahead of Sunday's final against England. "I realised for the first time when my name was read out before the match, and a lot of people started booing. I thought about it a...

Russian and US defence chiefs have brief telephone call
US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin spoke by phone with Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov on Friday. The Russian Defence Ministry said the telephone call was "initiated by the Russian side." "They touched upon the issue of preventing security threats and reducing the risk of potential escalation," it continued. In Washington, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said the "secretary emphasized the importance of maintaining lines of communication amid Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine." The two had most recently spoke in June. Neither side provided details about the latest conversation. Earlier this week, Germany and the US announced an agreement to station long-range US missiles on Germany territory beginning in 2026, the first time such weapons have been stationed in Germany since the end of the Cold War. The US weapons are to include Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of up to 2,500 kilometres capable of striking deep into Russia, as well as SM-6 air defence missiles and newly developed hypersonic weapons. Russian officials have reacted harshly to the announcement, accusing Germany and the United States of driving up tensions and pushing toward an arms race.
