Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian wins Iran's presidential election
Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian has won Iran's presidential election after beating hardliner Saeed Jalili in a run-off vote, a spokesman for the electoral authority said on state television on Saturday. Pezeshkian garnered 53.7% of votes, while his arch-conservative challenger received 44.3%. Voter turnout stood at about 49.8%, according to the electoral authority. Some 61 million people were eligible to vote for a successor to president Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May. Friday's run-off vote pitted Pezeshkian and Jalili against each other after none of the candidates gained an absolute majority in the first round on June 28. The president is only number two in Iran's power structure as Supreme Leader Khamenei functions as the head of state and has the final say in all strategic matters. He is also commander-in-chief of Iran's armed forces.

Poor debate was due to 'bad night' not serious condition, Biden says
US President Joe Biden has blamed his disastrous debate performance against Republican rival Donald Trump on a "bad night," vowing that he would not drop out of the race as calls for him to do so grow. In his first televised interview since last week's debate with ABC News on Friday, Biden described the evening as a "bad episode," but said there was "no indication of any serious condition." Pressure on Biden to step aside as the Democrats' 2024 presidential candidate has been growing from within his own ranks since he faced off against Trump at a 90-minute televised debate on June...
France defeat Portugal on penalties to reach Euro 2024 semi-finals
Two-time European champions France are in the Euro 2024 semi-finals after defeating Portugal 5-3 on penalties following a goalless draw on Friday in Hamburg. João Félix missed one spot-kick for Portugal and paved the way for France's win, which was complete with Theo Hernández's decisive effort. "We're in the semi-finals, and it's something we shouldn't take for granted, even if we may be used to it recently. I was already enjoying being in the quarter-finals. Now we go to win it," coach Didier Deschamps said. France will on Tuesday face Spain, who defeated hosts Germany 2-1 with a late goal in extra time. "I'm...
Merino header breaks German hearts and sends Spain into Euro semis
Mikel Merino's header late in extra time sent Spain into the Euro 2024 semi-finals and eliminated hosts Germany after tight a 2-1 win on Friday. In the battle between the record three-times champions, Spain took the lead on 51 minutes when Dani Olmo converted a clever assist from 16-year-old Yamine Lamal. Germany pushed hard for a leveller, which looked like it would not come when Niclas Füllkrug struck the post, but fellow substitute Florian Wirtz thrashed home off the post on 89 minutes. The game went to extra time and seemed to be drifting towards penalties - with Germany having a spot kick...
Hungary cancels talks with German top diplomat Baerbock
Hungary has cancelled planned talks between its foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, and Germany's top diplomat Annalena Baerbock, the German Foreign Office said on Friday evening. Baerbock had originally been scheduled to travel to Budapest on Monday. The trip will be rescheduled at a later date, the Foreign Office said, adding that it regrets the move. Baerbock's ministry said that "a serious and honest personal discussion" between the two ministers would have been "very important" in light of Hungarian Prime Minster Viktor Orbán's surprise visit to Moscow earlier on Friday. Orbán met Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on Friday, holding two-and-a-half hours of talks amid strong criticism of the surprise visit from top EU officials and European leaders. Several EU officials stressed that the Hungarian leader had no official EU mandate for negotiations with Russia, and that it had nothing to do with Hungary assuming the six-month rotating presidency of the European Union. The right-wing populist leader, often a thorn in the side of Brussels over a range of issues, is seen as closest to Moscow among European Union leaders. During a joint appearance with Putin after the talks, Orbán once again called for efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Ukraine war.

We had a few problems but kept the right spirit until the end and that made the difference," said goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who made some huge saves...

João Félix missed the only spot-kick and paved the way for France's win, which was complete with Theo Hernández's decisive effort. France will on Tuesday face Spain, who defeated hosts Germany 2-1 with a late goal in extra time. Portugal had the best chances to take the win during regular time, forcing goalkeeper Mike Maignan into two big saves to deny Bruno Fernandes in the 61st minute and then Vitinha in the 63rd. But the 0-0 stalemate persisted after extra time and the Portuguese side were faced with a second consecutive shoot-out, following a 3-0 win on penalties against Slovenia in the last 16. This time, however, the 2016 Euro winners weren't so lucky and said goodbye to the competition, while super star Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score and become the oldest goal scorer in tournament history. Ronaldo was successful in both penalty shoot-outs but these goals are not part of the official statistics.
Israel-Hamas negotiations to resume in Doha after weeks of deadlock
Israel and Hamas have revived indirect talks on a ceasefire-for-hostages deal in Gaza, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday evening. Israel's Kan public broadcaster reported that a delegation led by David Barnea, head of Israel's foreign intelligence service Mossad, met with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. In its statement, Netanyahu's office did not give specifics on who attended what was described as an "initial meeting" in Doha. But it said that it had been "decided that next week a team will be dispatched to continue the negotiations." The statement cautioned that "there...
Biden declares he is 'staying in the race,' insists he can beat Trump
US President Joe Biden insisted on Friday that he would not drop his bid for a second term, even as calls for him to bow out grow following his damaging debate performance against Republican rival Donald Trump. "Let me say this as clearly as I can, I'm staying in the race. I'll beat Donald Trump," he forcefully declared to a crowd of chanting supporters at a campaign event in the state of Wisconsin. Pressure on Biden to step aside as the Democrat's 2024 presidential candidate has been growing from within his own ranks since he faced off against Trump at a 90-minute...

Beryl weakens to tropical storm as it moves across Mexico's Yucatán
After slamming into the eastern coast of Mexico as a Category 2 hurricane, Beryl was pushing across the Yucatán Peninsula toward the Gulf of Mexico as a weaker tropical storm, forecasters said on Friday. Beryl is expected to regain strength over the gulf and to reach hurricane strength again at the weekend, with sustained wind speeds of at least 119 kilometres per hour, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. The hurricane is then expected to make its second landfall in Mexico, where it is on track to strike the country's north-east, and hit the US state of Texas, too. Strong winds, heavy...
Kroos struggles to contemplate end of career as Neuer, Müller wait
Germany icon Toni Kroos saw his glittering football career come to an end in dramatic fashion on Friday as Spain scored late in extra time to seal a 2-1 win in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. The 34-year-old announced before the tournament that he would retire after the Euros, having come back into the national team fold following Julian Nagelsmann's appointment as coach last year. He finished off his club career at Real Madrid with a sixth Champions League title last month, having also lifted a fourth La Liga title, but the dream ending of Euro glory for Germany in their home tournament...
Tearful Nagelsmann tries to see the positives after painful loss
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann fought back tears as he said his side did not deserve to lose their Euro 2024 quarter-final to Spain. The Spanish won 2-1 after extra time in Stuttgart thanks to Mikel Merino's late header. He admitted he had no idea what to do next as he had not planned for an exit. "The lads have given everything over the last six weeks," he told ARD as he almost started crying. "We came back well, we reacted well. We were not 100% at it in the first half. "It seemed we came much closer to a winner than the Spanish. It...
Putin opponent Kara-Murza in prison hospital - condition unclear
Vladimir Kara-Murza, a prominent opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin who is serving a 25-year sentence, was transferred from a prison colony in Siberia to a prison hospital. The transfer was reported by Kara-Murza's lawyers and wife on Friday. The condition of the 42-year-old, who has been in poor health for some time, is unclear. Lawyers for the British-Russian citizen said they were denied access to their client, who has been held at the Omsk prison camp. In February, Russia's best-known opposition figure Alexei Navalny died in a prison camp in the Russian Arctic region. Other political prisoners in Russia also complain of...

The game went to 30 minutes extra and seemed to be drifting towards penalties when Merino netted with a looping header on 119 minutes from Olmo's cross. Olmo plays for Germany's RB Leipzig while Merino used to play for Borussia Dortmund. The late drama means Germany icon Toni Kroos' football career comes to an end with a painful defeat. Germany deserved more after missing several chances, but they go out of their home tournament after showing so much promise at the start of the event. Spain - winners in 1964, 2008 and 2012 - now head into Tuesday's semi-final in Munich against 2016 champions Portugal or twice winners France.
Dutch coach Koeman not worried with big Turkish support in Berlin
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman is not concerned over the expected superiority of Turkish fans in Berlin's Olympic stadium for their Euro 2024 quarter-finals clash against Turkey on Saturday. "We know what to expect. I think it will be great to play with such atmosphere. We have to keep the ball so they can calm down," Koeman told a news conference on Friday. The game could be a home match for Turkey as some 200,000 people with Turkish roots live in Berlin. Koeman is expecting an "enthusiastic opponent," also because the Turkish people "have a big heart, just like the Romanians". The Netherlands defeated Romania 3-0 in the last 16 with their best performance of the tournament so far.
White House calls Orbán's meeting with Putin 'counterproductive'
The White House said it is "concerned" about Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's surprise trip on Friday to Moscow, where he met Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussed the war in Ukraine. The behaviour of the Hungarian leader is "counterproductive" in terms of supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and does not contribute to peace in the country invaded by Russia, said US President Joe Biden's spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre. "Russia could end this war today by stopping their aggression against Ukraine, against their sovereignty, against their democracy. They can withdraw. They can withdraw right now," she said.
NATO's Stoltenberg: Russian president thinks he can outlast us
Over and out: All going to plan, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will chair his last summit of the alliance's leaders next week in Washington. The NATO chief, however, does not show any diminished signs of commitment. In an interview with dpa, the former Norwegian prime minister set out his expectations for Ukraine, and a potential second turn for Donald Trump in the White House. dpa: Mr secretary general, since June 26, it's official. After 10 years at the head of NATO, your mandate will definitely end on October 1. Are you relieved that the NATO states have finally found a successor...
