German coach hopes for Olympic swimming in Seine but also for plan B
German swimming coach Bernd Berkhahn still hopes that the open water events at the Paris Olympics can take place as planned in the River Seine but has also called for a plan B. A report published last week said that the water quality of the Seine river was still not good enough to organize competitions there as planned. "The race in the Seine is a great challenge in terms of its demands. We have to put a lot of effort into preparing for it in training. I hope these efforts were not in vain," Berkhahn said in an interview published by the...
Palestinian medics say eight killed in Gaza City's Shejaiya district
At least eight Palestinians were killed and dozens more injured in Israeli attacks in Gaza City, Palestinian medics said on Thursday. "The schools were used as hideouts for terrorists," the IDF said. Hamas members had also planned attacks on Israeli soldiers from there, the army said. In order to prevent harm to the civilian population, precise munitions were used and the area was surveilled from the air, according to the IDF. Palestinians said earlier a school...

Palestinian medics say eight killed in Gaza City's Shejaiya district
At least eight Palestinians were killed and dozens more injured in Israeli attacks on a residential building and a school in an embattled Gaza City neighbourhood, Palestinians medics said on Thursday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) declined to comment, saying only it was checking the reports. Military operations are ongoing in several areas of the Gaza Strip, the IDF confirmed, including heavy fighting in Gaza City's eastern Shejaiya neighbourhood. The IDF said "dozens of terrorists" were killed in close combat over the past day and that more underground tunnels used by Hamas militants were destroyed in Shejaiya, which Israel says remains a Hamas stronghold. Shejaiya residents also reported seeing armed Hamas members attack Israeli soldiers. The IDF said fighting is also continuing in the city of Rafah in the far south of the Gaza Strip, with several fighters killed in an airstrike there. First responders are currently unable to reach areas in Rafah and Shejaiya due to the fighting, medics said. The IDF said a total of more than 50 targets were destroyed in airstrikes in the Palestinian territory on Wednesday.

EU carries out threat of provisional tariffs on e-cars from China
The European Union has carried out its threat to impose provisional tariffs on imports of electric cars from China of up to 37.6%, the bloc's Official Journal announced on Thursday. Chinese companies affected include BYD, a major sponsor of the Euro 2024 football tournament in Germany, hit with tariffs of 17.4%, Geely at 19.9% and SAIC at 37.6%. The threat of provisional tariffs on electric cars dates to last month after an investigation by the European Commission found evidence of illegal support from Chinese state subsidies. With the risk of a trade war with Beijing looming, the punitive EU measures become final within four months, unless China makes concessions. Until then, a security deposit has to be paid instead of a tariff.
